Presentation evening at Gymkhana

It was a hot & sticky evening of fun & frivolity under the ancient raintree at Gymkhana. Mr B got the proceedings going by generously passing around the Akvavit & Gammel Dansk, Scandanavian firewater which would put hairs on anyones chest!

After having the dinner, it was time for the awards & speeches.
Congratulations were given to all those who took part & for making the event the success it was. This was our biggest annual tournament & the feeling is that the club is going from strength to strength. Thanks were given to Guy for his help with posting photo's & Malcolm for organising the Royal booking.
In keeping with the clubs tradition of 1 player only being eligible for 1 trophy. Here are the results.

The 2009 Club champion was Guy Merrett who carded net 216. Off a low handicap, which can be very unforgiving this was no mean feat.

Net runner up with 218 was Malcolm Tetley, it really did go right to the wire.

Best gross was Mr B.

Stableford A grade, was a tie between Gary Burke & Kieran Savage with 99pts. Taking it then over 4 rounds, Gary was victorious with 130pts.

B grade Sherman Miles 103pts.

C grade keeping it in the family Phyllis Miles 102pts.

A new award was bestowed upon our very own Les Harvey with the highest 3 net cards. I won't divulge the total, or he may want a shot back! But the "gold" medal did look particularly attractive around his neck.

Nearest the pins.
Lanna: Guy & David Stephens
Mae Jo: Christian & Sherman
Highland's: Scott & Malcolm
Royal: Nigel & Ron Hill

Derek from Highland's very generously donated, 2 rounds of golf. 1 was awarded to club champion Guy. The other was won by Jack Cooper in a special draw.

Les thanked Christian & Scott for their work in organising the tournament & for everything they'd done during what could have been a difficult year. Our speech was entirely unrehearsed, honest. But bookings are being taken for barmitzvah's, stag parties, weddings, etc!

Finally it was terrific to see so many people enjoying themselves & it really is a lovely venue for such an evening.

Round 4 Royal 8th Oct

A slightly earlier start coupled with a long drive North out of town, saw us arrive at Royal to misty skies & dew on the grass. This however didn't take long to burn off & the day was unbelievably hot. Royal as ever was deserted bar us, it really is a shame, but that's Thailand. Perhaps reduced green fees would entice more of us out there apart from the usual once a year.
Everyone showed up so it was 6 groups of 4 for the last round, with all still to play for, with many different permutations at the business end of things.
The general opinion was that chipping around the green was extremely difficult with some quite bare lies & that the grass on the fairways was a bit threadbare in places.
The greens were receptive though & true, with not too many difficult reads.
Corky on his very best behaviour won the plaudits on the day with 71, the only competitor to beat his handicap. Playing partner Craig kept him good company carding 72, followed by Sherman & Christian with 73s.
Nearest the pins were Nigel on hole 7 & on the tricky 17th Ron. Shot of the day went to Gary B with his approach to the 14th, the ball travelled approx 100yds & his iron almost as far approx 80yds!
After discussion & going through the rules, the committee decided that we had made an error at Highland's with David Murphy's card. As he marked his stableford score lower than it should have been this is not a DQ & his card has been reinstated. This same error happened again on a couple of the cards today, they were duly corrected & scored. As ever please help us & try to ensure your cards are correct.
All the scores for each round are listed on the right & I'm sure you can fathom out this years club champion!
Thanks to all who participated & we look forward to a great night at Gymkhana on Saturday 7-7.30pm.

Round 3 Highland's 5th Oct

We came, we saw, we conquered...well some of us did anyway! A terrific days golf was enjoyed way out of town at Highland's. In a beautiful valley setting, it really is a picturesque course, but it was extremely hot out there. Many thanks to Derek for looking after us so well & for the prizes he so kindly donated. 27 took part & sadly yet again we had 1 no show, even after broadcasting to all to let us know if you can't take part.
The course was in excellent shape, great fairways & quick, true greens. Some of us felt the stroke index was a bit out on a couple of holes, but as they'd be worked out from the back tees, perhaps that would explain things.
After receiving some tutelage on the run up to the tournament, Malcolm has come good at just the right time carding a very commendable 68. Hot on his heels with net 69 was Phyllis, well done both. Craig & Kieran both 70, & Guy coming very close yet again with 71.
Nearest the pins were Scott on hole 7 & Malcolm (he did have a good day) on 17.
Unfortunately we had to DQ some cards for being marked incorrectly. Yet again, I'd suggest the player & the marker check at the turn & then again at the end, if it doesn't tally up go through it hole by hole, then sign & submit. Steve has been reinstated after Jack phoned to clarify the situation.
Frank has now completed his 3 cards after having gone round with Richie & Jeff Lincoln, great to see both of them out with us again.
A special thank you to Gary B & Soo for their very kind hospitality,...& tasty cooking! It was lovely sitting in their tropical garden enjoying their company & Leo is a big softie (honest) Grrr!

Round 2 Mae Jo 1st Oct

With light showers for the first few holes, low cloud throughout & towards the end a bit of breeze, these are about as good a conditions as we're likely to get in Thailand. 27 took part in the comp & with Ric joining us for his last round before heading back to Oz, we had a perfect 7 groups of 4. We had 1 no show so if anyone can't make future rounds, please let somebody know before hand,as groupings are organised in advance.
Many commented on how good the fairways were, they are indeed a pleasure to hit off.
The greens were a bit on the slow side, I don't think they'd been cut due to the amount of rain we've had in the preceeding days. But the course held up, as it does drain very well.
Play was a bit on the slow side, due to the intensity of the competition, stroke play does take a bit longer anyway.
Not to be outdone by her sister, winner on the day was Dao with 70. The ladies are playing off the mens tees, so it has to be said they're playing some very steady golf (Oh to not be erratic!). Runners up were Guy & Ron with 71's. Stroke play is very unforgiving as quite a number of competitors were putting together good cards, only to come unstuck with 1 or 2 awful holes.
Nearest the pins were Christian on hole 7 & a real tussle on the 14th with Sherman ultimately stealing the glory!
Next round at Highland's on Monday, please see tee groupings.

Round 1 Lanna 28th Sept

All 30 competitors arrived in plenty of time in high spirits eager to commence the 2009 annual tournament. The course did play pretty tough, although we were under cloudy skies, CM had experienced it's fair share of rain in the couple of days leading up to the event. With little or no run on the ball & far from easy chipping around the greens, the scores seemed to reflect this.
Talk about keep it in the family though...last years eventual champion Dao, headed the field after round 1, this year it was sister Ram. After warming up with runner up spot at MJ last week, Ram went one better & carded net 71. Runner up was Malcolm with net 74, the rest not really worth a mention!
Nearest the pin winners were Guy on hole 8 & David Stephens on hole 10.
With 7 members also playing, but not in the competition, that was a big turn out & thanks to all for helping to make things run so smooth.
Lovely to see David McCunall who joined us with his friend afterwards in the clubhouse.
Next round at MJ on Thursday, please see tee groupings.

Annual tournament 2009

This year’s club tournament will be held in September

The previous two years it has been held in August. In 2006 it was held in October, so the dates aren't set in stone. We apologize to people who may have made plans around an August event. Christian & myself took the decision to hold the tournament in September (still some time away), due to this year’s extraordinary event where one of the committee members resigned & with an Aug date that would have left only 1 committee member present. With organising the clubs main event of the year it was decided that in the clubs best interest that both Christian & myself be present...NOT so I can play in it.

The dates will be as follows:

Monday 28th September at Lanna

Thursday 1st October at Mae Jo

Monday 5th October at Highlands ( 1050 Baht inc caddy )

Thursday 8th October at Royal ChiangMai ( 920 Baht inc caddy)

Saturday 10th October will be party night with presentation of prizes. This will be held at the Gymkhana Club
